🎧 Approved: Venus Grrrls

Northern four-piece Venus Grrrls have built their own little underworld - goth-grunge with a literary obsession, a flair for the dramatic and a slightly coven-like fanbase.

With their macabre interest in writing songs about what lurks in the darker corners of Nineteenth Century fiction, if you haven’t come across them yet, new single ‘Mother Knows’ is where to begin.

It’s written about the myth of Mary Shelley having sex on her mother’s grave, ‘Frankenstein’ imagery woven through as a double entendre about passion and bringing flesh to life. Huge grungy riff, doomy drums, and GK’s vocal commanding enough to anchor the whole thing. 

On the bridge, guitarist Eliza Lee plays her guitar with a violin bow. “I’ve always loved the haunting effect you can get with a violin bow that I don’t really think you can replicate with gadgetry”, she says. “It felt like the right move for the graveyard ambience of the song”.  

The EP it’s taken from, ‘To Die As Lovers May’, was recorded in Spain because flying out to meet the producer was cheaper than bringing him to the UK. 

They rose at 7am, recorded until the small hours and survived on corner shop wine. The EP is out on 16 Oct, with a UK headline tour kicking off on 28 Oct - and if the incantation sounds this good on record, the live show should be something else.
