Former bassist of cult indie band Cane141, Shane Burke left performing behind after leaving the group and instead became an academic researching the world of copyright. You might think that getting deep in to the mechanics of the business behind music might be enough to put someone off it entirely, but recently the creative spark has hit him, resulting in his return in solo guise Acera197.

“After an extended period of time away from making music while making a drastic career change to copyright theory scholarship, music is being made apace again”, he says. Following the recent release of his eponymous debut EP, as that suggests, more new music is on the way soon.

That EP sees Burke set out a clear sound, built using samples and loops, often with acoustic instruments as a starting point. Lead track ‘NGM5’ sees him build his percussion from cut up stabs of piano, with layers of chords and circling guitar giving way to often unidentifiable samples building into an entrancing piece of minimalism.

As well as three original tracks, the EP also features remixes by Donnacha Costello and The Sight Below, which draw yet more out of Burke’s music. ‘Acera197’ is out now. Watch the video for ‘NGM5’ here:
