Cumgirl8

A name like Cumgirl8 is not exactly designed for mainstream success. Although it seems unlikely that such concerns occupied much time in this band’s collective consciousness when they picked it. Their vibe seems to involve acting on their creative impulses as quickly and purely as possible.

“We were inexperienced in our instruments [when we formed the band], but needed an outlet to express our frustrations and creativity”, says bassist Lida Fox.

That’s not to say that the project is without thought – their outlook and aesthetic are very clearly defined, and spill out into other projects, such as an online talk show and their own clothing line – but having that framework seemingly allows them to work quickly and flexibly within it.

Still, it’s a name that poses problems when it comes to finding any sort of audience. Their new EP, ‘RIP Cumgirl8’, is named in honour of this. “Unfortunately, we were banned from Instagram, YouTube, and restricted on our website for being too sexual, even though we censor ourselves constantly and don’t seem to have gone against the guidelines”, explains Fox.

Actually, right now they’re back in action on both Instagram and YouTube, but let’s not let that get in the way of the story. Last year, the band released their eponymous debut album, a sub 30 minute blast of eight eager and vibrant punk songs. Fox’s intricate basslines blend with Veronika Vilim’s slicing guitars over the solid base provided by drummer Chase.

The first track from ‘RIP Cumgirl8’ is ‘I Wanna Be’, which deviates fairly dramatically from the sound found on their album. I’d go so far as to say that you’re either going to love it or absolutely fucking hate it. The chances of being indifferent seem slim though. The relentless cat samples, other sound effects and frequently nonsensical listing of things you might like to become invites a reaction.

By way of explanation, the band offer this statement: “The future! The idea that you are good enough to be whatever you feel. You came you saw you felt you thought about it and now you can be! You can be a sandwich, you can be a magic wand! This is your manifestation time because your thoughts that were not helping you are no longer in your way”.

“I wanna be EVERYTHING, EVERY THING! All options are possible and equal and HOTTT MEOWWWW swish”, they go on. “It’s like a vortex where time disappears and the walls disappear… it’s arrived, the essential moment of being that grabs your attention and won’t let you look away”.

And once again, it’s that electric energy of their music, which feels like you’re listening to their thoughts in real time, that makes it so exciting.
