Five years on from their debut album ‘Soma’, electronic duo .gif have announced that they will finally release the follow-up, ‘Hail Nothing’, later this month.
With such a long gap, as you’d expect, their sound has progressed considerably. Still within the realms of pop, it has a darker edge, particularly on first single ‘My Darling’.
The new album “sits in its own little space between trip hop, post punk and slow driving techno”, say the duo. “If our previous [releases] were The Smiths, this album is Joy Division. It is also our love song to the void; an ode to chaos and nothingness”.
Of the new single, they add: “‘My Darling’ was written in a toilet during a panic attack. It is a song you cradle in your chest, curled up with your back to the bathroom door”.
