Her Songs

A collective of solo artists from the US, UK, New Zealand and Denmark – Dani Murcia, Emily C Browning, The Naked Eye, Marie Dahlstrøm and Emmavie – Her Songs get together in the same country whenever they can to write and record new music. Yes, this is possibly the worst set up for a band in 2020. But let’s hope they find a way to keep things moving, because musically the collaborations are really working.

It’s not actually that frequently that they are able to get together anyway. Their debut EP, ‘Los Angeles’ – recorded in, well, you know – was released in 2018. More recently, they managed to get together in an Airbnb in Toronto to make new EP, ‘Toronto (Vol 1)’. But, while their back catalogue may be somewhat sparse, the level of quality is exceptionally high.

And while each individual member may be more used to being the main attraction when performing and recording, there is what sounds like an effortless balance to their partnership. The laidback, soulful sound they’ve hit upon is consistent across tracks and everything that happens serves the music rather than any one individual’s ego.

“I think these four songs present our individual artistry so well, and touches down on different topics and moods”, says Dahlstrøm. “From Emily’s guitar playing to Dani’s and Emmavie’s production to Francesca’s lyrics. It feels like we captured everyone at their best”.

Emmavie adds: “The short turnaround time of each song asked each of us to show up in full every day and most importantly, allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable, sometimes arresting our own notions of the perfect idea for the greater good of the song. The result is a body of work that explores a variety of sounds, textures, themes and even languages”.

‘Toronto (Vol 1)’ is out now. Watch the video for ‘4am Disco’ here:
