July Jones

A songwriter with credits on tracks by BTS, Zolita, Nasty Cherry and more, July Jones has been building a career as a featured artist in her own right over the last couple of years. She’s supported the likes of Professor Green and Rita Ora, and recently performed at this year’s virtual Great Escape. Having put a handful of tracks out online previously, she’s now releasing her debut single proper, ‘Butterflies’, which sees her teaming up with alumni of this column Suzi Wu and Girli.

Explaining the song’s ear-grabbing sound, she says: “Normally every song has a scale, but the chorus of ‘Butterflies’ isn’t in any scale, which is why it sounds so unusual. I’m really making a statement by putting out this song and the fact it features two of my favourite artists, Girli and Suzi Wu, just makes it even more powerful”.

On her outlook as an artist, she adds: “I’m queer and my partner is transgender, so for me it’s very important to speak about being LGBTQ. I want my fans to know there’s a voice for them and not every song has to be about fucking and ‘bitches’ and alcohol, though it’s great to sing about that too sometimes. I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and I think other people will find my story inspiring. But at the same time, this is just the beginning for me. You are not going to believe what’s coming next!”
