Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern – or Sofi Tukker to give them their amalgamated and mangled stage name – have been working together since 2014 under the guidance of The Knocks, who provided them with studio space in which to develop their sound.
They are heavily influenced by the Brazilian styles of bossa nova and forró, and that sound can be heard on their upcoming debut EP, ‘Soft Animals’. Latest single ‘Matadora’ is officially released on 15 Jan, and like its predecessor ‘Drinkee’, interprets a poem by Brazilian poet Chacal into a beat-heavy dance track.
The duo head out on a North American tour supporting The Knocks tomorrow. But for all of us not in easy grasp of those dates, here’s ‘Matadora’ on SoundCloud:
