Beenie Man gig cancelled after homophobia allegations

A Beenie Man gig at Hackney Ocean was cancelled over public safety concerns after gay rights groups objected to lyrics they say incite homophobic violence.

A Beenie Man gig due to take place at the Hackney Ocean club was cancelled last week because of "concerns for public safety". The move followed vocal opposition to the gig from gay rights groups who argue some of Beenie's songs contain "lyrics that are an incitement to homophobic murder and violence".

Although Beenie Man was listed in a dossier presented to Scotland Yard's Race and Violent Crime Taskforce by gay rights campaigners last Sep, and while police admit they have spoken to the dancehall star about his lyrics, police officers stress they did not ask for last week's concert to be cancelled.
