Beijing courts rule against Baidu.com

Beijing courts have ordered Chinese search engine Baidu to disable its MP3 search and pay compensation to EMI, and Baidu plans to appeal.

A quick update on the legal fight against Chinese search engine Baidu.com. As previously reported, the record labels were suing the search engine through the Beijing courts over its MP3 search function which, the labels claim, aids music fans in their search for illegal music content. Well, the courts have ruled in the label's favour, ordering Baidu.com to disable its MP3 search service and telling them to pay unspecified compensation to EMI for specific downloads that, the label claims, were enabled by the search engine, even though the tracks themselves were not hosted on the web company's server. Needless to say, Baidu plans to appeal.
