BPI fill top legal role

The BPI has appointed Roz Groome as its top legal post, replacing Geoff Taylor, who moved to the IFPI.

Now obviously you've all been having trouble sleeping at night knowing that the top legal post at industry association BPI was vacant - former General Counsel Geoff Taylor having headed off to global trade body the IFPI of course. Well, worry no more, because that post has now been filled, with none other than Roz Groome who is, we're told, something of an "anti-piracy champion".

Confirming the appointment, BPI boss Peter Jamieson told CMU: "Roz Groome has proven herself to be a staunch defender of the recording industry's rights in a string of high-profile cases over the past three years. Her experience in this field is second to none, and I know this well deserved appointment will be welcomed across the legal community and the industry at large".

Successful cases managed for the BPI by Groome in the past include their label action against CD Wow and EasyInternetCafe, as well as a string of cases brought by the BPI's Anti-Piracy Unit. Meanwhile as Vice-chair of the Alliance Against IP Theft she has played in active role in lobbying for legislative change to protect copyright owners.

Confirming her appointment, Groome added: "The BPI's role is to protect, strengthen and promote the rights of its members. Enforcement is an important part of that, as is working with others in the IP industries and with our industry partners, particularly in an ever changing technological landscape. I look forward to playing a key role in that strategy."
