Brian Kennedy calls for Northern Irish collecting society

Singer-songwriter Brian Kennedy has urged the Northern Irish Assembly to create a Northern Irish collecting society, arguing local songwriters lose out on royalties.

Also doing some lobbying this week was Belfast born singer songwriter Brian Kennedy, who went to the Northern Irish Assembly at Stormont to call for the creation of a Northern Irish collecting society. He reckons that neither the British nor the Irish collecting societies properly represent songwriters from Northern Ireland, and musicians based there could be losing out on millions of royalties a year as a result.

Kennedy says this: "This is a very important issue. When I arrived at Stormont today I saw all these children being shown around and I thought there's the future. I thought down there is our musical future, in that group there could be the next Van Morrison, the next Snow Patrol or even the next Brian Kennedy, God help them. That's why it's important we give them a bills of rights for their musical future".
