Buju Banton gig in Manchester cancelled

Buju Banton's Manchester concert was cancelled after police cited concerns about public disorder, following protests from gay rights groups over homophobic lyrics.

Another artist from Jamaica's dancehall scene has had a gig cancelled after gay rights groups protested against homophobic lyrics. Last night's Buju Banton concert in Manchester was cancelled because of police concern of "public disorder".

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police told reporters: "Intelligence gathered about previous appearances of the artist and the implications of his previous performances suggest a likelihood of public disorder and the potential for disruption at his performances. Taking into account this intelligence and concerns from various agencies and community groups, the performance has been cancelled. Greater Manchester Police accepts the right to public freedom of expression but does not encourage anything which could cause possible hate or dissension within any community."

Banton was due to perform at the city's Bierkeller venue. A spokesman there told reporters: "We're just here to put on gigs. We don't get involved in the politics."

The local police force's city centre safe team worked with Manchester City Council and licensed premises in the city centre before making the decision.
