Canadian radio host sues over White Stripes sample

Canadian radio presenter Dominique Payette is suing The White Stripes for $70,000 over a ten-second clip of her interview used on Jumble Jumble.

The White Stripes are being sued for $70,000 over a sample on the track 'Jumble Jumble', which appeared on their pre-worldwide success second album 'De Stijl'.

Canadian radio presenter Dominique Payette says the song includes a ten second sample from her radio show, which was used without her permission. The clip is of an interview in French between her and a young girl. The girl is discussing doing something for the first time. Because the clip is cut short and taken out of context Payette says the listener could infer a sexual connotation in the conversation, which wasn't part of the original interview.

In her late in the day lawsuit, against Third Man Records, BMG Music Publishing and the band, Payette is suing under Quebec privacy laws rather than copyright laws, possibly because the copyright on the radio interview would be owned by the radio station not her.
