Chinese music fest postponed to after Olympics

Beijing's Midi Modern Music Festival has been postponed until October, after local police said they could not provide sufficient security during the Olympics.

Following the news earlier in the month that Beijing's Midi Modern Music Festival had been given the go ahead to feature 30 international bands this year, news today that the festival won't actually happen at all. While government officials had given their approval, local police say they aren't able to provide sufficient security for the event to proceed. Some reckon the decision follows the pro-Tibet protests that have followed the Olympic torch processions around the world, and fears that any major gathering in the run up to the Beijing Olympics could provide a platform for those who oppose China's presence in Tibet. The fact that the Midi festival is now expected to go ahead in October, ie after the Olympics, might mean there is some truth in that speculation.
