Clear Channel launch fan friendly schemes

Clear Channel is launching a scheme to sell CDs of live gigs minutes after shows end, and a free New Music Network to promote unsigned artists on its US radio stations.

Keen to be seen as a caring sharing fan-friendly organisation Clear Channel – who are facing a campaign against them in the US senate – have announced two new music initiatives – one through their gig promotion business, the other via their US radio network.

Firstly they are planning a venture where by key gigs they promote will be recorded, burned onto CD immediately, and go on sale to fans within minutes of the final encore. Executive VP Steve Simon: "The concept is still in its developmental phase but we're working collaboratively with artists and songwriters to provide the program at select events over the next year." He said that certain artists had already agreed to participate in the scheme, though he couldn't say who. While a great idea, and a real treat for fans, both Clear Channel and participating artists are obviously motivated by the chance to combat the sales of bootleg live recordings, where fans carry a mini-disc recorder in their pocket and then sell copies of the recording in the week after the show.

Secondly the group’s radio division has set up the Clear Channel New Music Network, a free online service where rock wannabes can post their music. A little like the old Peoplesound model, Clear Channel reckon they are offering a better deal for unsigned bands because they can promote the site through their 500 radio stations, and station websites. VP Programming Tom Owens: "Over the past few weeks, we have expanded the promotion to over 500 stations, and the response has been exciting. We believe there is a tremendous depth of talent, and we’re excited that this site will expose the music industry to a variety of new artists. In fact, we just discovered a new rapper named 50 Cent when we downloaded this incredible song called ‘In Da Club.’ Ever heard of it?"

A cocky Clear Channel President/COO Mark Mays added: "“We are very proud of the excitement around the New Music Network because we’re advocates for musicians and their music, and because our Radio and Entertainment businesses are looking for new artists and new music all the time. Our mission and charter is simple: exposure and growth for new music. We think this program will open up extraordinary opportunities for musicians everywhere. Now will you all get off my back?"
