CMU Selects - last week’s standout releases

From dubstep tantrums to post-punk punch-ups, last week’s releases weren’t pulling any punches. Here’s a look at the tracks that stood out

CMU Selects - last week’s standout releases

FaltyDL’s new album ‘Neurotica’

Returning to Planet Mu after a decade-long detour, FaltyDL (Drew Lustman) delivers ‘Neurotica’, a giddy sugar-high of a record inspired by the chaos of parenting and a child’s sense of play. There’s gabber, bounce and breakbeats - yet it’s hyper in a way that doesn’t feel exhausting.

Skrillex’s new album ‘F*ck U Skrillex You Think Ur Andy Warhol But Ur Not!! <3’

Yes, that’s the actual title. And yes, it’s a lot. But so is the album. Featuring cameos from Dylan Brady (100 gecs), Jónsi (Sigur Rós) and more, Skrillex’s latest project is an all-out brostep bacchanal - a relentless 40-minute assault of beat drops, sonic switch-ups and winking self-parody. It’s a throwback to his early-2010s brostep, but with more self-awareness and better jokes.

Wet Leg’s new single ‘catch these fists’

This isn’t their usual cheeky sapphic flirtation. It’s a raw nerve of a track, one that shifts Wet Leg’s breezy post-punk into darker, more caustic terrain. The lyrics jab at a belligerent man while the drums punch back with dance-punk fury. There’s a sinister-sounding new wave slant to their sound now, and it suits them.

PinkPantheress’ new single ‘Tonight’

In a move that feels both nostalgic and curiously niche, PinkPantheress reaches back to 2008’s ‘Pretty. Odd’ by Panic! At The Disco, borrowing orchestral elements from ‘Do You Know What I’m Seeing?’ and filtering them through her usual bedroom-pop lens. It’s a surprising but oddly cohesive reference point, another wink to the kind of Millennial/Gen Z crossfade her music seems custom-built to soundtrack.

Obongjayar’s new single ‘Sweet Danger’

Somewhere between a Spaghetti Western standoff and Afrobeat noir, ‘Sweet Danger’ sees Obongjayar prowling motel hallways, riding a mechanical bull and delivering lines like “I’m a wild boy / Baby, I am trouble”.
