CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Our selection of five releases that cut through the noise last week, from Kneecap and Paul Hartnoll, Big Thief, Celeste, Tame Impala and NewDad

CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Tame Impala’s new single ‘Loser’

It’s their usual psychedelic textural wizardry but coloured by defeat instead of transcendence. The rhythm moves like a sigh, every layer collapsing inward rather than expanding outward.

The accompanying video stars a (very) familiar face, Joe Keery, playing the sad, stumbling boy, fumbling through heartbreak and petty self-destruction, before Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker himself steps in, as if to admit: yes, the loser is me.

Kneecap and Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll new collab single ‘Sayōnara’

A banger pulling upon the spirit when raves were resistance, pent up anger and frustration released through synth stabs and dance instead of turning into hate.

In the video, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from ‘Derry Girls’ plays an exasperated desk worker on a comedown who escapes the drudgery of the office in a van emblazoned with “Free Mo Chara”, referencing the Kneecap member’s current legal woes.

Big Thief’s new album ‘Double infinity’

A collection that’s tender, exploratory and quietly seismic. Big Thief’s ability to find intimacy in the vastness continues to set them apart.

NewDad’s new single ‘Everything I Wanted’

Shoegaze shimmer meets Irish melancholy, it’s a track that wrestles with the gulf between expectation and reality.

Celeste’s new single ‘Woman of Faces’

Celeste’s voice still stops time, but here she twists it into something stranger, more theatrical, riding on an orchestral swell. A song about the masks we wear, delivered with the weight of someone peeling one off.
