CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Our selection of five releases that cut through the noise last week, from Reek0, Paranoid London, Lifeguard, Frost Children + David Byrne

CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Reek0’s new album ‘Dance Tapes’

A self-produced, self-mixed debut that folds UK bass, garage, broken beat, footwork and Reek0’s vocals together with seamless fluidity. The album moves from punchy club-ready cuts to smoother, late-night loverboy edits without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. Shape, rhythm and texture carry it, not showmanship.

Paranoid London’s new single ‘Decimated Driver’ - vocal and dub versions

Paranoid London team up with Glaswegian band Water Machine for a stripped-back, acidic two-tracker. Distorted synth lines ride on a pounding 303 bassline. Minimalist but always maximum impact from Paranoid London.

Lifeguard’s new single ‘Ultra Violence’

From their self-styled “maxi-single” (eleven songs in thirteen minutes), this one was recorded direct to an 8-track. Dub effects, echoplexes and the occasional sound of a “dirty mixing pot” contribute to the kind of chaotic, almost tactile texture.

Frost Children’s remix of Ninajirachi’s ‘F*ck My Computer’

St Louis duo Frost Children turn Ninajirachi’s track into a 2010s brostep weapon. Nostalgically good.

3 track album

David Byrne and Brian Eno’s new single ‘T-Shirt’

Bright electropop about doing good in a world that’s on fire, ‘T-Shirt’ pairs Byrne’s sharp political lens with Eno’s melodic instincts. The track reflects Byrne’s way of making sense of the current moment through music and lyrics - whether you like it or not.
