CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Our selection of five releases that cut through the noise this week, from James Blake, Angel Du$t, Tsatsami, Shy One, Moonlight + Lykke Li

CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

James Blake’s new single ‘I Had a Dream She Took My Hand’

An eerie elevator ride upwards. Built around a sample of Thee Sinseers’ Lynchian 50s-pop pastiche ‘It Was Only A Dream’, this track is romantic in the way dreams are romantic: tender, disorienting and slightly unreal.

Angel Du$t’s new album ‘COLD 2 THE TOUCH’

Angel Du$t return with a more direct strain of hardcore than some of their alumni have explored elsewhere, and it suits them.

‘Pain Is A Must’ is a melodic, hard-stepping standout; less about aggression than endurance, grappling with the simple, brutal act of keeping yourself going.

Tsatsamis’ new single ‘Recreational’

Robyn-coded vocals, but instead of crying on the dancefloor, this one spins out euphorically. It’s Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ pushed faster and brighter, all release, possibly a little speed and no self-pity.

Shy One and Moonlight’s new single ‘Private Joy’

Moonlight’s soulful delivery slides neatly into Shy One’s production. It has that loose and boppy feeling that Moonight brought to so many vital Rhythm Section releases. A deeply soulful mover and a really satisfying meeting point between the two.

Lykke Li’s new single ‘Lucky Again’

It’s transcendent pop, complete with a Max Richter sample. Lykke Li calls it “a samsara of a song”, and it moves like one, circling life instead of resolving it.
