CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Our selection of five releases that cut through the noise this week, from Alewya, Pigeon, Robyn, Lambrini Girls + Getdown Services

CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Alewya’s new single ‘ESHI እሺ’

Built around the Masenqo, a single-stringed Ethiopian bowed lute, and gradually opening into a chant-led crescendo, ‘Eshi’ is Alewya at her most spiritually electric. Rooted in tradition but absolutely unbound by it, it’s genuinely one of those tracks that stops you in your tracks.

Pigeon’s new single ‘Black James Dean’

William Onyeabor in outer space, or early Hot Chip making motorik afrobeat in a 70s New York loft, either way, Pigeon are doing something brilliant and not enough people know about it yet. ‘Black James Dean’ is the one to change that - debut album ‘OUTTANATIONAL’ is out in May and we’re very excited.

Robyn’s new album ‘Sexistential’

Nine tracks of fizzing, unapologetic synth-pop about IVF, single parenthood and middle-aged lust - more brash, more alive, more Robyn than ever. Luminous genius.

Lambrini Girls’ new single ‘Cult of Celebrity’

Lambrini Girls taking down our modern fascination with celebrity in the most catchy, crunching way possible. Coachella this month. As it should be.

Getdown Services’ new single ‘The Radiator’

A song about the very specific satisfaction of threatening a broken radiator into working, and it’s one of Getdown Services’ best releases yet. In fact, it’s Bristol’s finest post-punk disco duo doing what they do: making something bizarre and petty and funny into a banger.
