CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Our selection of five releases that cut through the noise this week, from Tooth, untitled (halo), Basht, Slayyyter + strongboi

CMU Selects - the last week’s standout releases

Tooth’s new single ‘Take Me As I Am’

A big and hearty bid for indie-rock canonisation - Sonic Youth guitar work, motorik bassline, Mike Crossey on the mix (Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Alice).

untitled (halo)’s new single ‘sex’

Perhaps the most dance track by the band. Barbed electronics, synth-sirens and crunchy breakbeats, disjointed but gleeful, with a video shot on handycam across LA and Paris. A good preview of their self-titled debut album, out in November.

Basht’s new album ‘Poor Advice’

Sparse and ominous before erupting. Radiohead-like verses. This track points the gun at the institutions that shape us - the Catholic Church, the military-industrial complex, the corporate boardroom. Produced by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Dry Cleaning, Perfume Genius), we’re told ‘Poor Advice’ is the title “because it’s all the counsel handed down from above”.

Slayyyter’s new single ‘i think he's got a girl’

I think she might be on the road to a Grammy! A softer sound than usual, Slayyyter’s vocal riffs in this make it so delicious; you feel the hurt but understand the acceptance that comes with it. It’s lead single from her upcoming album ‘Wor$t Man In America’, out December.

strongboi’s new single ‘dizzy’

A groovy little number, hazed out with pastel textures and airy, angelic vocals carrying the whole thing.
