Control opens in Cannes to rapturous reviews

Anton Corbijn's film Control, about Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, has received rapturous reviews at Cannes, with critics praising first-time actor Sam Riley.

That much previously reported new film from Anton Corbijn on the life and death of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has received rapturous reviews at the Cannes Film Festival where it debuted this week.

Critics are also commending the performance of first time actor Sam Riley who plays Curtis. Corbijn, himself directing his first feature film, says he thinks Riley - who was "working in a warehouse in Leeds folding shirts" when he was cast to star in the film - brings "an innocence and freshness that I was hoping for but never thought I would find". The director adds: "I can't think of the movie without Sam, to be very honest - I think he gave everything to that role. It was his first film, it was my first film - in a way we had nothing to lose".

The film, called 'Control', probably won't go on general release in the UK until the Autumn.
