Diddy guilty of “transportation to engage in prostitution”, but acquitted on sex trafficking and racketeering charges

Diddy has been acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges at the end of a dramatic seven week trial in New York, but he has been found guilty on two charges of “transportation to engage in prostitution”. That conviction could still result in a 20 year prison sentence

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has been found guilty of “transportation to engage in prostitution” in relation to two women, including his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. However, he has been found not-guilty on sex trafficking and racketeering charges. Prosecutors will now push for the full 20 year sentence possible for the two charges on which the musician has been convicted.

The jury deliberated for thirteen hours at the end of a seven week trial in which Combs was accused of using his entertainment business to run a criminal enterprise that allowed him to physically and sexually abuse both men and women, and to cover up those crimes. Although found guilty on two charges, the prosecution failed to convince the jury of the wider racketeering enterprise.

The two charges on which Combs was convicted relate to the two women who testified during the trial: Ventura and another victim referred to in court as Jane.

The criminal investigation into Combs - as well as a flood of civil lawsuits against the musician that continue to be filed - were prompted by legal action launched by Ventura in November 2023, which Combs quickly settled. Her lawyers issued a statement earlier today commending their client’s courage throughout the entire legal process.

“Although the jury did not find Combs guilty of sex trafficking Cassie beyond a reasonable doubt, she paved the way for a jury to find him guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution”, says attorney Douglas H Wigdor. “By coming forward with her experience, Cassie has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the fight for justice”.

“We must repeat - with no reservation - that we believe and support our client who showed exemplary courage throughout this trial”, he continues. “She displayed unquestionable strength and brought attention to the realities of powerful men in our orbit and the misconduct that has persisted for decades without repercussion. This case proved that change is long overdue and we will continue to fight on behalf of survivors”.

It will be for the judge overseeing the proceedings to decide how long Combs should now serve in jail. The musician has been in prison ever since being charged last year, though his lawyers have asked that he now be released on bail pending sentencing. A decision on the bail request is expected imminently.
