Digital download chart to be launched

The Official UK Charts Company will launch a downloads chart later this year, tracking legal MP3 sales via OD2 services, as Daniel Bedingfield fronts Digital Download Day.

The Official UK Charts Company has announced it will launch a downloads chart later this year tracking the MP3s bought from legit online music suppliers who use the OD2 system – which includes MSN, HMV, Freeserve and MTV. Details of the new chart were announced by OD2 prior to the second digital download day – a Europe-wide promotion where tracks are made available free via OD2 in a bid to encourage music fans to make use of the legal download services rather than their pirate counterparts like Kazaa. The second Digital Download Day is being fronted by Daniel Bedingfield who told reporters: "Digital is the future of music. Every record needs to be available legitimately online before things can really take off. A superior choice of tracks is fundamental to a defence against online piracy."
