eMusic say they're still the number two download store

Download firm eMusic disputes a USA Today claim that Amazon is already the second-largest US digital music store, insisting it remains second after iTunes.

Independent download platform eMusic have disputed claims by USA Today that Amazon's US MP3 download platform is already the number two digital music store (in the US presumably). eMusic claim to be second in the market after iTunes, and they say that that hasn't changed despite Amazon's high profile entry into the market. Digital Music News quote eMusic top man David Pakman thus: "Outside of iTunes, no one sells more music digitally than eMusic, and we don't plan on giving up that title anytime soon". Of course measuring releative market dominance, even within just the US digital music market, is difficult, not least because eMusic have a slightly different business model to iTunes and Amazon (ie a bundled track subscription model, rather than a pay per track model). Plus most download firms aren't that forthcoming on how many tracks they've sold - Amazon are yet to release any stats for their US download service.
