Following those 'Fugees to reform' rumours, we now hear that The Fugees did indeed reunite to play a secret show organised by comedian Dave Chappelle last weekend in New York. It was the first time the trio of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras had appeared together for more than eight years.
The gig took place in the middle of the Brooklyn neighbourhood Fort Greene and was billed as 'Dave Chappelle's Block Party'. Originally, Hill was the only group member confirmed to appear on a bill that also included Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Dead Prez and Jill Scott. Then preceding Hill's performance Chapelle said: "We were going to have Lauryn Hill perform tonight but Columbia [Records] wouldn't clear her songs. So she came up with a better idea. Ladies and gentleman...the Fugees!"
The trio played a number of their own hits including 'Ready or Not' and their cover of Roberta Flack's 'Killing Me Softly' as well as a selection from Hill's debut album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. Speaking last week, Wyclef had hinted at a reconciliation when he told the website http://www.allhiphop.com that the trio had patched up their differences and were looking forward to collaborating again. He said: "We're all definitely talking. The energy is definitely good energy. I spoke to Lauryn. I spoke to Pras. And [it's] just real good energy, good vibes."
The concert was free to ticket holders who had registered in advance on the Web. Those contacted were then met at a secret spot in Chinatown, where they were bussed to the event. The event was filmed by director Michel Gondry for planned release as a future documentary and DVD.
