Radio types GCap have said that they are confident media regulator OfCom will compromise on the planned expansion of digital radio. As previously reported, OfCom indicated plans to increase the overall number of digital radio stations in the UK, which pissed off GCap who, as a partner in Digital One, spent an awful a lot of money securing what they were told would be the only national digital radio 'multiplex'. GCap threatened to take OfCom to court over the proposed expansion in order to secure their previous investment. But last week GCap boss Ralph Bernard said that he understood that when the media regulator reveals its strategy for digital expansion later this month they will outline plans that won't create direct competition for Digital One. The Guardian quote Bernard as saying: "What I understand is that it's not Ofcom's intention to make it directly head-to-head competitive. They believe it's right that there are more digital services because they think it will accelerate the take-up of digital radio, and that those services should be complementary and not competitive".
