Government launches Digital Radio Working Group

The government has set up a taskforce including Ofcom, the BBC and commercial radio groups to explore whether and when analogue radio signals could be switched off.

The Department Of Culture, Media And Sport has established a 'taskforce' to oversee the transition from analogue to digital radio in the UK which will include people from OfCom, the BBC, commercial radio groups and consumer rights groups. It seems the government is now keen to set a date for turning off analogue radio signals in much the same way targets have been set to turn off analogue TV signals.

Confirming the launch of the The Digital Radio Working Group, Culture Secretary James Purnell told reporters: "Digital radio offers more choice to consumers and the British radio industry is leading the world in the transition to digital. There would be great advantages for both consumers and business to completing that transition, but there are also a number of obstacles. I have asked the group to develop a consensus about whether, how and when those obstacles could be overcome".
