Hawkins says it's not about the cat suits

Justin Hawkins has hit back at critics who say The Darkness are successful only because of their outfits, insisting their music is what counts.

Justin Hawkins has had a go at those critics who claim The Darkness are only successful because of their crazy outfits and glam rock style, calling them "fucking shortsighted" and pointing out that you can't see the cat suits when you listen to the music on CD and on the radio.

Hawkins also said that the release of the band's second album will be something for non-fans and fans alike to look forward to, especially if you're a couple on the verge of a break up: "I was talking to someone the other day and they liked the band because their ex-husband didn't. We became a tool in the breakdown of their relationship. They used us as a barometer. But the criticism the husband had about us was, 'well it's showmanship, isn't it?' What you get on the record isn't showmanship. It is musicianship and songwriting."
