It's a tradition that supplies of popular Christmas presents should run out in the run up to the 25th Dec, and reports suggest that the present most likely to run out this year is the iPod. Steve Jobs has already warned supplies are running low, and Amazon in the US says it has now sold out. Normally such short demand is good for the makers of said presents - as demand rises they can hike up prices, and the 'short-supply' hype ensures a sales push when new stocks are available in the New Year. But some reckon the short supply may backfire on Apple with consumers opting for a second choice player made by one of the computer giant's competitors rather than waiting for the New Year to buy a player. Whether that prediction comes true remains to be seen. (While we're on this, several reports on the shortage of iPods refer to the £220+ players as "stocking fillers" - that's quite a stocking filler, what ever happened to a box of matchmakers and some crap from the pound shop?)
