Line-up announced for VE Day celebrations in Trafalgar Square

Katie Melua, Will Young and Katherine Jenkins will perform at a televised concert in Trafalgar Square on 8 May marking the 60th anniversary of VE Day.

More than 15,000 people are expected to rock up to Trafalgar Square next month for a special concert designed to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day and to replicate the jubilant events that took place on London's streets when World War II ended back in 1945 (though with fewer recent widows crying in the background). The televised concert on 8 May will include performances from Katie Melua, Will Young and Welsh classical star Katherine Jenkins, and will be accompanied by video footage of those celebrations that took over the city 60 years ago.

Commenting on her involvement in the show, Jenkins told reporters: "I'm really proud to be taking part. It's a really positive and celebratory way of making people aware of this hugely momentous event in our history. The younger generations-will realise the message behind the evening."

London mayor Ken Livingstone, one of the people behind the celebrations, added: "On 8 May 1945 thousands of Londoners, who had endured the blitz and the privations of war, created one of the greatest impromptu parties London has ever seen when they crowded into Trafalgar Square to celebrate. Sixty years on we are going to do it all over again to remember the generation that sacrificed so much to preserve our liberty."
