The mother of the late Kirsty MacColl has told reporters she is "flabbergasted" at the sentencing of the driver of the speedboat that killed her daughter. A Mexican court found Jose Cen Yam, who was driving the boat that 'ran over' the singer while she swam off the south-east Mexican coast back in 2001, guilty of negligent homicide. But they only charged him £61, with an additional fine of £1450 to be paid to MacColl's two sons Jamie and Louis who witnessed her death. Jean MacColl told reporters: "It has never been about getting money, you cannot put a value on human life, but a £61 fine has shocked everyone". Cen Yam was a deckhand on the speedboat and questions have been raised about whether he should have been driving because he had little or no experience. With this in mind Mrs MacColl may well now appeal against the size of the fine.
