Manchester Evening News plan morning edition

The Manchester Evening News plans a morning edition, printed overnight, but staff are opposed unless more journalists are hired.

Manchester's evening newspaper paper, the Manchester Evening News, is planning on launching a morning edition. It won't be a new title, simply a very early edition of the main paper (which they should perhaps start calling the Manchester not really in the Evening at all News).

The paper's editor, Paul Horrocks, told his staff the move, which will mean the paper is printed overnight for the first time, would enable it to improve its coverage of sports and entertainment: "It will help us with things like sport and concert reviews which we can't usually get in until the lunchtime edition - these will be in the first edition, which of course will benefit readers".

However, his staff don't seem too impressed by the decision, which they see as an attempt to enter a new market without paying staff any more money. Miles Barter, regional organiser for the National Union of Journalists, has told reporters there is "overwhelming support to try to resist the move" adding: "Members are not opposed to a new edition but if the company wants to expand they need to take on more staff and make sure they are properly paid. At a bare minimum they should take on more casual subs".
