MCA boss latest major label resignation

Jay Boberg has resigned as president of MCA Records, with Craig Lambert acting as head until a new president is appointed.

Resigning from top jobs in major entertainment companies seems to be in fashion. First Thomas D Mottola quit the Sony Music top job. Then Steve Case announced he’d be standing down from the top job at Warner Music parent company AOL Time Warner. Now Jay Boberg has resigned his presidency of US based Universal label MCA Records. And all in the space of a week!

Boberg, who has led the company for seven years, told his staff of his immediate resignation yesterday. Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris followed up the announcement by telling reporters: "I want to thank him for his dedication and many contributions to the company over the years. I truly respect Jay as a person and record executive and will miss him."

MCA’s Senior VP of Promotion Craig Lambert will fill in as head for the label until a new president is appointed in a few months times. Lambert will report to the head of another Universal label - Interscope Geffen A&M - Jimmy Lovine. But Morris assured MCA’s staff that they would remain a stand alone label long term and not be integrated with another branch of the Universal Music Group.
