My Chemical Romance are facing legal proceedings after they cancelled a gig at an American university the weekend before last.
The emo band were due to play the University Of Maine on 27 Oct, but pulled out at the last minute because of an unspecified "medical issue" within the band. Now the students' union staging the gig have invoiced the band for the $20,500 they claim they lost advertising and organising the non-event, and they say they will sue if payment is not forthcoming. They have declined an offer by the band to reschedule the gig for another date.
The union's VP Student Entertainment, Derek Mitchell, has told campus magazine Maine Campus: "Unless it is truly due to sickness or injury of the band, we intend to seek full damages for breach of contract. When they played Friday night, I think that kind of voids an 'Act of God' claim. Come Monday, if we haven't received a cheque or have no word from them that they intend to pay, we can go to [the university] senate on Tuesday night and discuss it further".
He continues: "Essentially this loss of $20,000 is a loss of their [the university senate's] constituents' money. It is really their obligation to allow us to legally recover that in any way possible. I'm going to fight this to the death. Students will get their money back. It will come back to student entertainment, and we will have big concerts".
