Mix tape maker DJ Drama arrested in RIAA crackdown

DJ Drama, real name Tyree Simmons, has reportedly been arrested after anti-piracy officers raided his Atlanta offices and seized bootleg CDs, according to reports.

This is interesting. One of the leading names in the unofficial mix tape scene that has played a crucial role in launching a string of hip hop and rap stars over the years has become embroiled in a crack down by the Recording Industry Association Of America on the distribution of bootlegged CDRs. DJ Drama (real name Tyree Simmons), perhaps best known in his role as DJ for rapper TI, but also the producer of the popular Gangsta Grillz mixtapes, was reportedly arrested earlier this week when anti-piracy officers raided his offices in Atlanta and seized a large collection of bootleg CDs. Specifics of the raid and arrest aren't known, although Simmons has reportedly been bailed, though other reports say officials plan to destroy all the CDs seized, and that the producer's website has gone down. The whole incident could pose something of a dilemma for the record industry, given that one arm is busy arresting Simmons for distributing unlicenced music, while the other arm is begging Simmons to include their new talent on one of his mix tapes in order to gain the exposure and credibility needed to launch a new artist. As I say, interesting.
