My Chemical Romance settle with Maine University

My Chemical Romance have agreed to cover losses incurred by Maine University's students' union after cancelling a gig, ending a threatened lawsuit.

My Chemical Romance have reached an agreement with Maine University, who, as previously reported, had threatened to sue them after they pulled out of a gig there at the last minute, claiming that drummer Bob Bryar had hurt his hand and couldn't play.

The University's students' union, which organised the gig, were angry about the last minute cancellation, mainly because the band kept another gig commitment the next day by hiring in a fill-in drummer. They told reporters earlier this week that the cancellation had left them $20,500 out of pocket because of unrecoupable marketing and production costs. Although the band had offered to reschedule the gig, the union said they were not interested in that offer and wanted to be compensated for their loss, adding that they planned to speak to university chiefs about suing the band if no compensation was paid.

The union's decision wasn't backed by all of the college's student population, with many MCR fans there claiming the band had had a genuine reason for pulling out of the gig and that the union were being too demanding. Nevertheless, the band this week said they would cover the union's losses, ending the dispute.

Speaking to The Maine Campus magazine, the union's Derek Mitchell said: "It sort of came as a surprise that they agreed to do it, but at the same time we're really pleased that they understood the situation and were so quick to agree. We are very happy we didn't have to proceed further". He also added that the union may now consider staging a rearranged MCR gig.
