Notting Hill Carnival attendance halves as police report 146 arrests

Police estimate 600,000 people attended the two-day Notting Hill Carnival, less than half last year, with 128 injured and 146 arrested.

Police have estimated that only 600,000 revellers gathered on the streets of west London during the two-day Notting Hill Carnival this weekend - less than half the number who attended last year's carnival.

Carnival organiser Debi Gardener said: "People have come here and had a really good time - there has been a very relaxed atmosphere. I have no idea why there are fewer people here this year - carnival success is not dependent on the number of people who come, it depends on people enjoying themselves and having a good time."

The atmosphere was a lot better than in past years with the Police seeming to be more relaxed and smiley, and it was only on Monday evening that serious incidents happened, with two men being stabbed.

Scotland Yard said about 128 people were injured during the carnival, and 146 were arrested.

The highlight was by far the party provided by home of Da Lata, Mad Capsule Markets and Baaba Maal, Palm Pictures, who's balcony soundsystem kept a street-full of partiers happy at the Notting Hill Gate end of things (it got hairy when the police came to the door, but the two WPCs only wanted to compliment the DJ!).
