The MD of local radio group Original 106, John Evington, has stepped down. It's possible that the former Wireless Group exec is simply keen to move on after two years with the Original business, though his departure will add to speculation regarding the future of the three Original stations, which operate in Southampton, Bristol and Aberdeen.
The stations are owned by CanWest, who were very eager to get into the British radio sector a few years back, but who now, some gossipers say, are increasingly disheartened by the sector.
Evington had a key role in launching the original Original in Southampton, and the two sister stations. But the Southampton station has struggled to build an audience, and was hindered a little by OfCom issuing a "yellow card" against it for playing many more Top 20 hits than their licenced format allowed. A revamped schedule was launched last month in a bid to turn things round.
