Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The 66 year old musician is scheduled to have surgery in December, and says he believes he will have "a rapid and complete recovery". In a statement on his website, Lesh urged all men to be tested regularly for the disease, which can be successfully treated if detected early enough, saying "you may save your own life."

The bassist, who underwent a liver transplant eight years ago and has been under regular medical surveillance since, added: "I am feeling energetic as always and all my scheduled appearances will occur as planned".
