Big story of the day, of course, legendary record producer Phil Spector has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was found shot dead inside his LA home. He was arrested yesterday at 5am LA time and was freed on a reported $1 million bail a few hours later. He will now appear in court later this week to be officially charged with murder. He will be defended by Robert Shapiro, the lawyer who represented OJ Simpson.
Police confirmed the identity of the dead woman as 40-year-old Lana Clarkson, however they did not comment on the relationship between the murder victim and Spector. They simply said they had found the firearm that killed her on the premises and that, at this time, no one else was being sought in connection with the killing.
Spector, famous for his ‘Wall of Sound’ production style, worked with many of the greats over the years including the Beatles, the Ronettes, Tina Turner, and the Ramones. Last week Apple Records confirmed they would be re-releasing one of the Beatles albums he produced – ‘Let It Be’ – but with all of Spector’s orchestrations removed – confirming Paul McCartney never liked Spector’s production on what he wanted to be a back to basics album.
Most recently Spector has been working with Starsailor, which I guess would drive anyone to murder.
