Police investigate Russian download site

Moscow City Police have launched a formal investigation into allofmp3.com, which sells downloads at very low prices, a move welcomed by IFPI.

Digital music news now, and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has applauded an announcement by the

Moscow City Police that they are launching a formal investigation into allofmp3.com.

allofmp3.com sells downloads at cut price rates - with some tracks available for as little as five cents. That has raised concerns among rights holders around the world, though the site’s owners claim that they are a legitimate operation and that they have secured the appropriate licences to sell their music via Russian copyright organisations. It is those claims that the Moscow police will look into.

Russia has long been a major centre of music piracy, with reports suggesting more pirated music is sold there than the genuine article. However,

Russian music pirates working online are of higher concern because they, in theory, have global reach. It remains to be seen if allofmp3.com are, in deed, guilty of that kind of copyright violation.
