Preston says MySpace is dead

Preston Ordinary Boys' Preston has told NME.com that MySpace is dead, arguing that promoting music through it has become a box-ticking exercise.

MySpace is over. Dead. It's official. Well, that's what Preston Ordinary Boys says. Given his celebrity status, we should probably all take note and delete our accounts. What's more, CMU should probably cease and desist with our old, tired MySpace Of The Day feature. Maybe.

To be fair, what he's saying is that promoting your music via the site is not the organic thing it once was, if it ever was. He told NME.com: "MySpace was important with one band, Arctic Monkeys. Now it's on the check list with record labels. We've got to do some instores, sign all these posters, give away a signed guitar and set up a MySpace account. So MySpace is already dead. It's over."

And actually, this is another fair point: "It's owned by fucking Rupert Murdoch for fuck's sake! MySpace is a prime example of something which is cultivated in order to appear like it's alternative when it's nothing of the sort. Also, what kind of person sits on the computer all day going, 'I've got 12,400 friends but I've never met any of them'? How depressing!"

However, what he's forgetting is that it is still a facility bands can use to share their music and attract the attention of people like me who will then nominate them for the prestigious MySpace Of The Day slot, an honour which invariably leads to world superstardom. Oh, it so does.
