Reggae star accused of gay bashing

Reggae star Buju Banton and Horace Hill go on trial in Jamaica on 19 October, accused of beating six gay men in June 2004, and both will plead not guilty.

Reggae star Buju Banton will go on trial in Jamaica later this month for allegedly beating up six gay men back in 2004. Banton and another man, Horace Hill, are accused of beating up the six men at a house in Jamaica the June before last. Both of the accused will plead not guilty when their trial begins on 19 Oct.

Banton, of course, is a well known champion of gay rights: he and many of his fellow dancehall types have been frequently accused of inciting violence against gay people through their lyrics - accusations which have led to numerous gigs in Europe, the US and Australia being cancelled after protests by local gay rights groups, like the UK's OutRage.
