Is she, isn’t she? Some confusion as to how long Ms Sara Cox intends to stay as breakfast show host with BBC Radio 1. Speaking to The Sun yesterday she said she’d quit the show this time next year explaining: "It will really break my heart when I say bye to breakfast ... but I will be pleased to get my life back. I don't find the early mornings difficult. But it would be nice to have the freedom to stay up late if I want to. I love doing the breakfast show, I like waking up with people and it will be hard to stop. But I will be pleased to get my life back."
But more or less as soon as the article hit the streets Radio 1 went into a PR overdrive to deny Cox will leave the show next year – telling reporters Cox’s much reported new three year contract doesn’t begin until April, and that suggestions she would leave the show after a year were “taken out of context”.
In a statement released by the station Cox said: "I'm not planning on leaving the breakfast show just yet. I have a new three-year contract that starts in April, which will keep me doing the show for at least another year after that. And I'm not even thinking of leaving then."
Radio 1 don’t want to lose Cox. Despite criticism for her show, and a much hyped slump in listening figures last year, her show is still popular – and is in fact currently increasing the size of its audience – back up to somewhere nearing 7 million listeners a day.
As is always the case these days when any high profile radio job reportedly comes available – reports suggested Xfm’s Christian O’Connell would be favourite to replace Cox should she go.
