Snap of the day: Jay Jay Pistolet

CMU tips Jay Jay Pistolet, who has toured with Laura Marling and Noah And The Whale and released the 'Happy Birthday You EP' via Stiff, produced by Charlie from Noah And The Whale.

Another artist I can't believe we haven't tipped before - so thanks to the PR for reminding us - Jay Jay Pistolet is someone that personally ticks a lot of boxes, having toured with both Laura Marling and Noah And The Whale, and chosen to release his single through one of my favourite 'rising' labels, the James Yuill-affiliated Chess Club records. Now he has an EP out, the oddly named 'Happy Birthday You EP', through punk outlet Stiff, which meets with further approval by having Charlie from Noah And The Whale on production duties. This, thankfully, is a fine move with the end result being tracks like 'We Are Free', a bold slice of melodious, atmospheric folk with enough cross-over appeal to attract more discerning record buyers, and perhaps even land him an appearance on 'This Morning'.
