Sting sued by chef over Roxanne and Message In A Bottle royalties

Nevada chef Roy Smith has filed a complaint claiming he should receive royalties from Sting's 'Roxanne' and 'Message In A Bottle', which police have said is a civil matter.

Following that run in last year with his cook, now a chef is taking legal action against Sting, though not over allegations of mistreatment while in The Police frontman's employ, but over rather strange allegations that he helped the singer write two of his most famous songs.

Roy Smith of Nevada has filed a complaint with his local police claiming he should have a cut of the royalties on the songs 'Roxanne' and 'Message In A Bottle' because, and this is a real story, honest, he once told Sting about a girlfriend he had called Roxanne and a time when he put a message to his mum in a bottle.

Smith says he told Sting these stories when they met in a restaurant in the seventies. He reckons the singer later tried to get in touch with him, but his mother didn't pass on the message because she thought it was the real police trying to track him down.

The Nevada police have, unsurprisingly, told Smith this is a civil matter. It remains to be seen if a royalty lawsuit will follow, though Sting's people seem pretty confident it wouldn't stand up in court. And I'm no expert, but I suspect they're right.
