There were tributes also for former Radio 1 and Xfm DJ Kevin Greening, whose death, aged 44, was much more unexpected. Greening, most recently a presented on Smooth FM, died on 29 Dec.
Paying tribute, Trevor Dann, Greening's boss at Radio 1, wrote on the BBC website: "He was a really nice, modest, quiet bloke, whereas some other people with half his talent had twice his arrogance. Subsequently they got on and became very famous. [But] he loved radio - it was his life. He wasn't remotely interested in television or celebrity or the paparazzi".
Another former Radio 1 DJ, Simon Mayo, who worked alongside Greening at both Radio 1 and Radio Five Live, told reporters: "He was quite shy - sometimes a bit embarrassed about achieving the level of fame he had. The work that he put into his programmes was fantastic. He was very meticulous. He was a fantastic example and naturally gifted".
Few details of the causes of Greening's death have been officially released, with an official statement simply saying he died "peacefully" in his sleep. However, media speculation is now rife that the premature death was caused by a heart attack brought on by a dangerous mixture of cocaine, ecstasy and GHB, possibly taken during some kind of sex game. A man who was with Greening prior to his death was arrested, though faces charges for drug possession rather than any wrong doing with regards the DJ's death. Meanwhile police are asking for witnesses who may have seen Greening being supplied with drugs at the XXL Club in Southwark the day before his death to come forward.
