Tributes pour in for CBGB founder Hilly Kristal

Debbie Harry, Tina Weymouth and Kim Gordon have paid tribute to CBGB founder Hilly Kristal, who died after complications from lung cancer.

The world of rock and roll has continued to pay tribute to CBGB founder Hilly Kristal who, as previously reported, died on Tuesday of complications relating to lung cancer.

Blondie's Debbie Harry, one of the most famous acts to play at Kristal's legendary New York venue, told reporters: "I am very sorry that Hilly is gone. He was a big help to Blondie and to the New York music scene for many years. His club CBGB's has become a part of New York lore and rock n' roll history".

Talking Heads founder member Tina Weymouth, another band always associated with the venue, added: "His art was the artless willingness to support us to grow better utterly without favoritism".

Elsewhere, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon dedicated a song to the late CBGB owner at their show at the Roundhouse in London last night. As reported yesterday, the former club owner is set to have a private memorial ceremony for family and friends soon, with a public remembrance to follow soon afterwards.
