Underground dance feature gets February premiere

Documentary Maestro, directed by Josell Ramos and centring on DJ Larry Levan, traces the UK underground dance scene and will premiere in London in February.

A new feature film documentary tracking the growth of the UK underground dance scene, and its influence around the world, will get a February premier in London. The official blurb: “Most film documents of this movement have fallen short of its true story and impact to the world, providing us with a glossed over account of the time. Opting for a more personal and candid approach, Maestro shows the true history of its individuals. Tracing the underground's dance origin, Maestro brings out a true, candid and tragic understanding of this intense lifestyle, and the lives they lived and died for. It is far from mere nostalgia, this film is like the music and experiences it chronicles.”

Directed by Josell Ramos. ‘Maestro’ centres on DJ Larry Levan, a lesser known pioneer in the scene, normally overlooked because of his early death and lack of recorded legacy. Numerous others will also appear including: Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, Little Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Kenny Carpenter, Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell, Derrick May, Sven Vath, Ralf, Ko Kimura, Alan Thompson, Mr Mike and Mark Oliver.
